There’s an old addage that says “one is chance, two is a coincidence and three is a trend.” Trend on, friends - it would seem the new “to-do” in an indie rock video is have someone else do the lip synching for you.
We saw it coming in the noir-thriller debut video “Hang Me Up to Dry” from the Cold War Kids, then saw it again in the also noir but with a surreal twist “Providence” by TV on the Radio. Now that Modest Mouse have gotten into the act with “Dashboard” we’re taking bets on who will be the next A-list indie rock group to embrace it.
Will the Arcade Fire make an entire video of supermodels lip syncing a la George Michael’s “Freedom 90″? Would the Shins merge the “Phantom Limb” school play concept and Kidz Bop to have a chorus of toddlers lip synching their next hit?
We end this dispatch with a tip of the cap (yes, we stole it from you Stephen Colbert) to the Black Keys, for shouting out the inherent lameness of lip synching before all the trend even began in their video for “Your Touch”.
