El-P at SXSWYou remember that El-P vid we ran like a week ago, right? That cartoony joint (as they say) by the New York Jukie with the firecrotch and the pervstache? Of course you do. It was only the utmost from the foremost when it comes to underground MCs and producers who are keeping the movement moving.

His latest record, I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead, has been bugging eyes out and throwing arms back with its dead honest, everyday Brooklyn vibe since it went public March 20. Down below we’ve got El-P himself telling the camera how it all came together and exactly what it all means. Here are some cliff notes to keep you sharp while you watch:

* The future of hip-hop is STRUCTURE — people need to start seeing albums as a whole, not just as collections of songs.

* Fantastic Damage was El’s paranoia album; I’ll Sleep When You’re Dead is his post-traumatic stress album. A musical snapshot of New York comprised of many genres, he enlists help from Trent Reznor, Mars Volta, Aesop Rock, Cage and Cat Power to “throw it all together and destroy it all.”

* “As much as there’s dope music out there it doesn’t feel like there’s a lot of timely music out there. And I just wanted to make a record that was timely that felt like it was about us, now…”

Alright rappy, get in there.
