Your humble Subterranean blogger went to the second Modest Mouse concert way, way uptown at the United Palace Theater in Washington Heights last night and brings you back this report: watching Johnny Marr sing back-up for Isaac Brock is the path to bizarro world.
After getting over the intial shock of how teenie-tiny Marr is, I focused on his backing vocals a bit more and realized that, on the pre-Ship Even Sank tracks he sounded an awful lot like Shaun Ryder did singing the chorus of “Dare” for Gorillaz - like he was howling and it was hurting his accent.
My personal highlight of the evening was their Modest Marr rendition of “Bukowski” - very moody, sometimes screechy and awfully depressing. So, really, all of my favorite things.
A couple of blurry pictures for your entertainment.
