Speaking of ‘blonde’ UK girl-groups, hows about a look at the Pipettes show we crashed Tuesday night (Smoosh opened). Gwenno, RiotBecki and Rosay shimmied and bopped the night away, delivering their trademark saccharine nostalgia with all kindsa umph.
Though all the classics (”Pull Shapes,” “Dirty Mind,” “Your Kisses…,” etc) were accounted for, the gals found time for a couple of new songs that broke the giddy girl-group mold, leaning more into torch song territory. And you know what, we’re buying it. Ballads seem like a pretty natural next step for The Pipettes, who will soon have to prove that they’re no one-trick ponies.
And while that’s no easy task, we can tell you with no doubt that these twisters are willing to work for it. Case in point: Tuesday’s 16+ crowd was very stubborn with their hips. Despite many direct requests, the kids just wouldn’t dance. Did that slow down our Pipettes? Nooo. They kept smiling, styling and wagging those hands until, about three songs from the finish, the crowd finally broke down and shook a leg. It was downright inspiring.
And now… from their debut album, We Are The Pipettes, “The Pipettes!”
