Today’s videos you forgot is for readers on the younger side, who may know the name Helium but aren’t familiar with the band’s sorted indie rock history. It breaks down like this.
The original Helium line-up, not actually called Helium but instead known as Chupa, was formed in 1992 by chanteuse Mary Lou Lord that included Juliana Hatfield’s brother Jason, Brian Dunton and Shawn King Delvin. The band evloved, Mary Lou Lord left cos she didn’t dig the direction (and now you can see her street busking at SXSW every year - it’s a signature move that always shocks), Mary Timony joined as the new singer and the band became Helium with the departure of Hatfield. By the time the “Pat’s Trick” video came out Dunton had also left Helium and been replaced by Timony’s then boyfriend Ash Bowie. At some point circa 1993 they all signed to Matador Records and lived happily ever after.
At least until the band broke up and Mary Timony went solo.
That’s entertainment.
