Ever reach a crossroads in your life where your social consciousness and your material desires don’t line up? Jyotia Mishra did and it gave him a hit pop single under the moniker White Town.
On it’s surface this video looks like a pretty literal interpretation of the song lyrics where people choose between their base desires, their personal needs and what society expects from a romantic relationship - with literal crossroads clearly delineated.
If you dig a little deeper you’ll find that Mishra as White Town liked to cloak political messages inside lyrics of love songs. Wiki tells us he was a straight edge ex-Marxist, so it stands to reason that this song and video could be read as a Marxist feminsit statement about women of the working class choosing to put themselves before an unfortunate romantic attachement, possibly made to gain money or social status.
Or maybe not.
Either way it’s a killer song.
