We sent Russell Sanzgiri out to the M83 show on Tuesday May 20 in L.A. and he brings you this report.

Tuesday night M83 (aka Anthony Gonzales) launched his US tour in support of his John Hughes-tinged album Saturdays=Youth at The Echoplex, in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles.

More photos and review after the jump.

The band breezed through their hour and a half set of 80’s synth meets ambient electronic homages to teenagerdom. Borrowing heavily from their musical older sisters, the Cocteau Twins and A Flock of Seagulls, M83 performed in front of LA’s most recent crop of soon to be hipsters.

M83-2 Live in L.A.

Vocal assistance provided by LA’s own Morgan Kibby (The Romanovs) solidified their musical roots with her Kate Bush and Liz Frazier like sound.

M83-3 Live in L.A.

The album unfortunately didn’t translate as well live. The performance was a bit underwhelming considering M83’s usual tendency towards a more epic sound.
